The Extra Chapter is back for October.
After another brilliant response to our autumn events, we’re opening one more table for readers who missed out—or who simply prefer their book club a little smaller.
On Saturday 3 October, we’ll be discussing The Names by Florence Knapp: an emotionally rich novel that takes one decision and follows it into three possible lives.
We’ll begin online from 10:30am–12:30pm, where we’ll unpack the novel’s questions around identity, choice, family and inherited trauma. Then, from 2:30pm, we’ll gather at Megan’s on the Hill in Balham for brunch and continue the conversation around a table of just 12 readers.
Whether you’re arriving with a friend or joining us on your own, you can sit with us.

About the Extra Chapter
The Extra Chapter is Brunch Book Club’s smaller, more intimate event format.
With only 12 places, there is more room for everyone to speak, dig deeper into the book and get to know the readers around the table. You don’t need to prepare an essay or arrive armed with literary analysis—just bring your thoughts, your questions and whichever passages you underlined.
Lots of our members attend alone. You’ll be welcomed, introduced and seated as part of the group from the beginning.
Brunch Book Club’s in-person events welcome women—including cis and trans women—non-binary people and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Megan’s On the Hill, Balham
Megan’s on the Hill is a cosy, fairy-lit neighbourhood restaurant in Balham, with a bright conservatory and a Mediterranean-inspired brunch menu.
It is located at 41–43 Bedford Hill, moments from Balham town centre and its transport links.
Food and drinks are not included in the ticket price and will be purchased separately.
The Names

Her husband expects the baby to inherit his name. But Cora considers two alternatives: Julian, the name she has chosen, or Bear, the name suggested by her daughter.
From that single decision, three versions of one life unfold.
Moving between those parallel paths, The Names explores identity, domestic abuse, family, inherited patterns and the possibilities contained within our choices. It is tender, devastating and almost purpose-built for the kind of conversation that carries on over brunch.
Please note that this will be a full-book discussion and will contain spoilers. The novel also includes depictions of domestic abuse.
